The Elks Mental Health golf tournament is taking place Saturday (Aug. 16).

All proceeds from the golf tournament will go towards the Wheatland Family & Community Support Services.

Crystal Gaudet, CAO of Wheatland FCSS, explained the importance of the event.

"It is so important for all the proceeds to stay within our community. We often see that when agencies or organizations are raising funds, it goes back to a head office, and then it's dispersed from there, and it could be disbursed throughout Alberta or even into the City of Calgary. It's really important that the funds that we raise stay within our community."

The golf tournament will start at noon and take place at the Strathmore Golf Club.

According to Gaudet, the number of people needing mental health care has increased in the past couple of years.

"The goal is to help those who need financial aid when it comes to receiving mental health supports. There's so much talk about mental health these days, and the reality is that the number of people suffering from mental health issues has significantly increased in the past five years," added Gaudet.

"That leads to a long wait list. There are free services that are offered in Alberta, but they have a large wait list, and when somebody needs mental health support, waiting is not an option."

Registration was closed on July 31.

If you know anyone suffering from thoughts of suicide, call 911 or text 988.
