This green space is blooming into something bigger in St. Malo.

Thanks to the efforts of local students, residents, and environmental volunteers, the Coin Rendezvous Park was beautifully transformed on Sunday, Aug. 10.

The meeting corner

The name, which means ‘meeting corner’ in French,  was chosen through a contest involving local schools including, École St-Malo, reflecting the park's purpose and heritage.

“We had a little contest for naming rights and so the kids got a chance to get some names together,” says Darrel Cure, Reeve of RM of De Salaberry.

The initiative gave students a chance to help shape a space they’ll enjoy for years to come.

Growing greenery

Nearly 100 community members and volunteers gathered to plant trees, shrubs, and grasses at the park.

Cure notes it was a great time all around and is very grateful for the support.

“This is another step forward,” says Cure.

Volunteers from the Winnipeg-based environmental group, Shah Satnam Ji Green S Wing, supplied the plant materials to bring the space to life.

Cure says the RM’s previous Economic Development Officer (Martha Petrusevich) was connected with the organization and helped bring everyone together.

Next steps

Previous improvements to the space included concrete pads, a vehicle charging station, and picnic shelters.

“The next steps here are going to be continuing with landscaping, getting topsoil on site, and then getting some grass going.”

Cure notes electrical will be coming soon to light up the space even more.

“We’re nearly getting to completion. It’s greatly appreciated by all members of the community and RM staff,” he notes.

“One step at a time should get us to the finish line.”

As the Coin Rendezvous Park continues to grow, it stands as a testament to what’s possible when a community comes together to shape its shared spaces.
