A man who lived in Brock has been sentenced to one year in custody and 18 months’ probation after pleading guilty to assault, uttering threats, theft of a credit card and taking a motor vehicle without consent.

Kindersley court heard that in 2023, Duane McKay travelled to Ontario to meet a woman he had met online in 2021. On the trip back to Saskatchewan, he assaulted her at a hotel.

In May that year, while living with the woman in Brock, Sask., McKay prevented her from leaving during an argument, threatened to kill her, and stopped her from reaching an inhaler she said she needed. He then followed her outside, threatened her again, and took her car, taking her purse and credit cards.

A month later, during a trip from Alberta to Ontario, the pair stopped in Saskatoon, where McKay drove dangerously and threatened to kill them both if she did not obey him after a conflict involving her cell phone. He later struck her in the jaw with a full bottle of juice and refused to take her to a clinic.

The judge accepted a joint submission from the Crown and defence and also ordered McKay to pay $1,000 in victim surcharge fines.

Kindersley Provincial Court continues on Tuesday.
