This week’s KPMG Taste of Summer Charity BBQ brought friendly faces, beautiful weather, and delicious smokies in support of Southeast Cancer Support Services.
Southeast Cancer Support Services is a charity organization dedicated to alleviating challenges faced by cancer patients in the southeast.
Board Chair Heather Jowett notes the $5,012 raised is going towards transportation for patients. While other priorities will come up in the future, transportation is the current focus.
“People aren't going for appointments because they don't have transportation, so to me that's quite shocking. I think that is why our priority is transportation first.”
Jowett says that having help with this cost is amazing.
“Well, that will buy a lot of fuel for transport. So yeah, we have quite a big cost with moving people around the province.”
Community members shared more than lunch at the barbecue. They also spent time sharing their stories and support.
“It's quite humbling to realize what people have gone through and that they're prepared to share their stories,” says Jowett.
Jowett was thankful for the opportunity to connect with the community on a personal level and discuss the work the organization does.
“It's not just about raising funds. It's about raising awareness. There are people from smaller communities, and we've managed to touch base with them and hopefully spread the word.”
If you missed the opportunity to grab a hot dog and support a local charity, you can show up in front of SCU on Wednesdays from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. for the rest of August.
Lunch includes a smokie, a bag of chips, and condiments for a minimum donation of 2 dollars.
