From water testing to community BBQs and a golf championship, there’s a lot happening in Morris this August.

The Town of Morris is inviting residents to participate in a provincial tap water monitoring program this August and September.

Mayor Scott Crick says while the community has a modern water distribution system, there may still be concerns for some homeowners.

“For many residents of the town, we do have a very up-to-date and good water distribution system, but there may still be the presence of lead in people’s pipes and homes, especially if it’s older construction,” he says. “To help support the province’s initiative, the Town of Morris is offering complementary lead monitoring in August and September. If you have concerns about this or you have an older home and you’re aware that you may have older plumbing in it, please reach out to our public works foreman.”

Residents can contact the Public Works Foreman by emailing pwforeman@townofmorris.ca or calling 204-746-2532 to arrange testing.

The Office of Drinking Water began phasing in lead testing requirements in 2019, beginning with Manitoba’s largest and oldest water systems with known or suspected lead service lines. This was prompted by Health Canada lowering the national guideline for lead in drinking water from a maximum acceptable concentration of 0.01 milligrams per litre (mg/L) to 0.005 mg/L based on a sample of water taken at the consumer tap. Manitoba adopted this new guideline as a drinking water quality standard in 2020.

Multiplex ready for holiday party bookings

With summer winding down, Crick says now is the time to book for the busy Christmas season at the Morris Multiplex.

“One of the changes we’ve had at the Multiplex in the last year is we’ve gotten quite good at basically providing a turnkey Christmas party or event,” says Crick. “This means nicely decorated tables, arranging the catering, arranging the bar service — all you have to do is call, say what you’d like, we’ll say yes, and we’ll make it happen.”

Bookings can be made by emailing admin@morrismultiplex.ca or calling 204-746-2832.

Fundraising BBQ to support Valley Volunteers Auxiliary

The Valley Volunteers Auxiliary of the Red River Valley Lodge will host its annual fundraising barbecue on Tuesday, Aug. 20 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Emmanuel Baptist Church.

“There is a $7 minimum donation for people that would like to come, and it supports a great group,” says Crick. “Especially when we had the 50th anniversary last year, you could see the amount of work and love that they put into that particular facility.”

Golf club championship returns

Golfers in Morris can gear up for a revived competition at Riverview Golf Course.

“For the first time in quite a few years, there will be a club championship being played on Aug. 24 with a shotgun start at 1 p.m.,” says Crick.

Those interested in participating can email golfcourse.morris@gmail.com or call 204-746-2027.
