The Sundown Gymkhana returns this weekend for its 21st year, bringing two full days of rodeo-style competition and family entertainment.

The event kicks off Saturday afternoon with the five-event gymkhana starting at 3 p.m., with registration opening at 2. The evening will feature a supper and live band. On Sunday, activities begin with a pancake breakfast at 8 a.m., Cowboy Church at 10, followed by the open gymkhana in the afternoon.

Long-running tradition

Carla Campbell says the event has stayed true to its roots while continuing to grow.
“This year is going to follow the same format as all of our other years. That is what people know. That is what they love,” she explains.

The Sundown Gymkhana is the largest event of its kind in the area and remains a strong family-oriented gathering. Campbell says kids are encouraged to participate and enjoy the atmosphere throughout the weekend.

Giving back to the community

Each year, proceeds from the event are shared with a local group or charity. This year, organizers are once again partnering with Guardians of the Children, who will run the silent auction.

“Well, the original organizers of this event … have a heart for kids and families and they love to see safe places and for kids to grow up and to come out and have fun,” says Campbell. “Guardians of the Children have a very strong heart for children as well.”

The silent auction proceeds will go to Guardians of the Children, with the possibility of additional support once all event totals are finalized.

More to look forward to

Leading up to the weekend, raffle tickets for a colt are available through committee members and will also be sold at the event.

Campbell adds that thanks to strong sponsorship and community support, the Sundown Gymkhana continues to thrive.

“The sponsors that we work with are incredibly generous. The businesses that we go around asking for silent auction prizes for always outdo themselves,” she says.

There is no admission fee for the event. Campbell encourages families to attend and watch for signage near the arena, as crops planted nearby may make the grounds less visible from the road.
