Alberta RCMP is reminding young and inexperienced drivers to stay cautious behind the wheel as traffic volumes increase during the summer months.

According to Transport Canada, new drivers are more likely to be involved in fatal or injury collisions due to inexperience and age.

Mounties say drivers with a learner’s licence must always be accompanied by a fully licensed Class 5 driver. They also stress the importance of avoiding distractions, such as using a phone, and ensuring all passengers are buckled up.

“The posted speed limit is meant for ideal conditions,” RCMP said in a release. “Drivers may need to slow down depending on weather, road, and traffic conditions.”

Other reminders include giving extra travel time during busy summer weekends, avoiding tailgating, and watching for cyclists and motorcyclists who may be harder to spot.

“Driving can be challenging for new drivers — with it comes a huge responsibility to keep yourself and other road users safe,” said Sgt. Darrin Turnbull of Alberta RCMP Traffic in the release. “All drivers can do their part by staying attentive, driving according to conditions, and looking out for each other on the roads.”
