The number of active wildfires in our province has dropped slightly since last week.

The Manitoba Wildfire Service is reporting that there are now 153 active wildfires in our province, which is down from 161 on Wednesday. The total number of wildfires this year is 417, which is well above the average of 331 for this time of year.

According to the Manitoba Wildfire Service, there is a low fire danger in the majority of the province, with a moderate fire danger level in the central and eastern areas.

Manitoba remains under a provincial state of emergency, under the Emergency Measures Act due to a wildfire season that is the worst over the past 30 years, with more than 1.99 million hectares (ha) of area burned in the province to date. The provincial state of emergency is in place until August 22nd.

Meanwhile, Fire EA061, which is burning in Nopiming Provincial Park, remains out of control at approximately 359,040 ha burned. While access to Atikaki and Nopiming provincial parks has reopened, the fire continues to smoulder throughout the parks.
