Alberta Mounties are reminding residents to take extra precautions when it comes to their mail, offering a series of tips to reduce the risk of theft and encouraging Albertans to sign up for the RAVE Mobile Safety alert system.
“Mail theft is a crime of opportunity, and small steps can make a big difference,” said Chad Cronk, Acting Crime Prevention Liaison Supervisor with Alberta RCMP. “By securing your mailbox, picking up your mail promptly, and considering secure delivery options for packages, you can reduce your risk of becoming a target.”
Among the tips provided:
-
Install a locking mailbox to deter thieves.
-
Collect mail promptly after delivery instead of letting it accumulate.
-
Consider a package delivery box or choose shipping that requires a signature.
-
Make sure your mailbox is securely attached to your property.
-
Ask a trusted neighbour to collect your mail if you’re away, or suspend delivery.
-
Shred mail containing personal or financial details.
Alongside theft-prevention advice, the RCMP is highlighting the benefits of the RAVE Mobile Safety system, a notification platform that shares real-time information with communities.
“RAVE alerts allow us to get important information out quickly,” Cronk explained. “That includes ongoing crimes, traffic advisories, missing people, or even invitations to community presentations. It’s a valuable tool for keeping Albertans informed and engaged in community safety.”
