Female athletes in Strathmore will soon have the chance to learn more about sports and how to take care of themselves when it comes to athletics.
Active Solutions for Health is hosting Female Athlete Sport Talk (FAST) on September 6 from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. and will feature several speakers and local vendors.
Erin Walton is the performance program coordinator at Active Solutions for Health, and she explained why the event is important.
"This is an event where we're going to hopefully bring our community together, some female athletes, and hopefully their parents. We want to talk about some of the issues that we see facing female athletes."
The event was first started in 2017, but when COVID hit, the event was derailed.
Brent Moreau is the clinic director at Active Solutions for Health and has been there since the beginning of the event.
"In our clinic, we were getting these kids and girls specifically from the ages of nine, twelve, and thirteen, and they're getting injuries like ACL tears and concussions. It was just starting to get to the point where I thought we need education, we need some information for the community, for these athletes."
The organization doesn't just want the athletes to show up and learn, but also wants to engage with the parents.
One of the goals of the event is to help people understand how to manage athletic injuries.
According to Walton, she wants to help younger female athletes stay in sports.
"Sports are the community and the commodity that you form by being involved in those connections and the ability to excel in a common goal with a group of people. If we're having young women who are getting injured in those careers and are getting cut short, there's a fundamental part of their sporting existence that they don't get to access. As someone who has been fortunate to play my sport and be an athlete my whole life, I want to help build stronger athletes in our communities."
Moreau believes the event will strengthen people's knowledge of sporting injuries.
"I think it's important that we empower the athlete, empower parents to be advocates for their kids, and also to empower the community. I think this is one of the reasons why we're putting this on to provide information, to provide networking so that you can get the answers that you need."
The event will take place at Strathmore High School.
