Focus on the Family's founder James C. Dobson passed away Thursday morning.

"Today we remember a hero of the faith," says Focus on the Family on their Facebook page. "Our Founder, Dr. James C. Dobson, passed away this morning."

Focus on the Family radio programs that often include the voice of Dobson are played on over 3,000 radio facilities in North America and in twenty-seven languages in approximately 4,130 additional facilities in over 160 other countries.

"Although we're sorrowful over this loss, we are thankful for his legacy of family ministry that will live on for future generations, and rejoice that he is now in the presence of our Savior."

Dobson was 89 years old at the time of his death. According to My Charisma, Dobson experienced a brief illness that led to his decline in health.

The Christian leader was born in Louisiana in 1936 and founded Focus on the Family ministries in 1977.

In 2010, Dobson left Focus on the Family, at which time he launched the Dr. James Dobson Family Institute (JDFI), continuing his mission through Family Talk.

"His bold leadership, integrity, and compassion helped equip countless families to thrive in a world of shifting values," said Gary Bauer, Senior Vice President of Public Policy at the Dr. James Dobson Family Institute. "He was a mentor, a counselor, and a steady voice of truth in turbulent times."

According to the Dr. James Dobson website, He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Shirley; their children, Danae and Ryan; daughter-in-law Laura; and two beloved grandchildren.
