The Kerrobert Courthouse Restoration Society is marking the 105th birthday of the historic building with a community celebration and fundraiser this week.

Jessica Mitchell, a town representative with the society, said the group is focusing its efforts on a major restoration project.

“Right now we are trying to fundraise for is the foundation,” Mitchell said. “The basement foundation is what really needs to be done, which is a really big undertaking.”

Mitchell said the foundation work would involve pulling back dirt from around the building, laying blue stone, and re-cementing the walls. She added the work is necessary because parts of the basement walls are beginning to deteriorate from water damage and age.

The birthday celebration will take place Wednesday, August 27, and is designed as a laid-back community event.

“We’re just having smokies and hot dogs, all ages are welcome. There’ll be a bar and some games,” Mitchell said. “Everything will be outside if the weather’s nice, there’ll be courthouse tours and the library is also open until 8.”

Entertainment will feature a group from Major, Sask., along with a local performer. Food will be offered by donation, with all proceeds supporting restoration work.

Mitchell said the society also hosts an annual Christmas fundraiser, which this year will include a hypnotist.

She added the group is always welcoming contributions.

“We’re always accepting donations,” Mitchell said. “You can come to the town office or send it to the town office on behalf of the Courthouse Restoration.”
