As we see classes begin in Strathmore this week, school zones will also be going into effect throughout the area.

Classes begin at Sacred Heart Academy and Holy Cross collegiate on Aug. 28, while Strathmore High School, Westmount Elementary School, Wheatland Elementary School, George Freeman School, Crowther Memorial Junior High School, Brentwood Elementary School, and Trinity Christian Academy begins school on Sept. 2.

School zones will be active following the school's respective opening dates, and are in effect during the following hours unless posted otherwise:

  • 8:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.
  • 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
  • 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

School zones can be distinguished by a yellow pentagon that features two people walking. They can often be confused for playground zones, which feature an orange diamond depicting a person running after a ball.

Unlike school zones, playground zones are in effect all year long from 8:30 a.m. until one hour after sunset. In both zones, the speed limit is reduced to 30 km/h.

Those caught speeding will face demerits and fines, with speeding tickets doubled when in school zones.
