Starting Thursday, August 28, 2025, school zones will once again be active in Grande Prairie. With an earlier-than-usual start to the school year, Enforcement Services is reminding drivers to be prepared for reduced speed limits, busy crosswalks, and more pedestrians on the move around schools, playgrounds, and neighbourhood streets as children return to class.
School zones are in effect in Grande Prairie from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on school days, with playground zones enforced from 7:30 a.m. until one hour after sunset. The maximum speed limit in these areas is 30 km/h.
Road safety reminders for drivers
- Know and obey the 30 km/h speed limit in all school and playground zones.
- Stay alert at intersections and crosswalks where pedestrians may suddenly appear.
- Watch for school safety patrollers and follow their directions.
- Use caution backing out of driveways and parking stalls.
- Never pass another moving vehicle within a school or playground zone during active hours.
- Watch for students riding bicycles and other similar devices.
Parking & drop-off safety
Enforcement Services will also focus on parking safety in school zones throughout September. Common violations include:
- Parking within five metres of a crosswalk or intersection.
- Stopping or parking in “no stopping” or “no parking” zones.
- Parking on sidewalks.
- Parking against the flow of traffic (left wheels to curb).
Parents and guardians are encouraged to review drop-off and pick-up areas with their school before the first day to ensure smooth and safe traffic flow.
