As students across Portage la Prairie prepare to return to class, some are brimming with excitement, while others are simply ready to settle back into routine.
For Alexander Hustins, heading into Grade 7 at Arthur Meighen School, the start of the year is about more than just books and lessons. He says he’s looking forward to reconnecting with old friends while also making new ones.
“Hopefully there’s going to be more and new people coming into school and just being able to learn some more,” Hustins says.
Music and math are his favourite subjects, and he’s especially drawn to the piano, which he practices often. He’s also interested in joining the school’s art club. Hustins adds that students moving into higher grades should be ready for challenges but embrace them as part of the experience.
Different priorities for older students
High school brings another perspective. For Aiden Hustins, a Grade 10 student, returning to class feels familiar but still holds opportunities. He says he’s most excited about taking automotive, a new elective that lets him work with cars.
“I guess I could learn a lot more since it’s a lot different, I’m learning how to fix cars instead of just selling parts for them,” Hustins notes.
Outside the classroom, Hustins focuses on sports. A longtime football player, he plans to rejoin his team this year as they move up to a tougher division. With several veteran players gone, he expects a season full of new faces and challenges. His advice to younger students starting high school is simple: good luck and be ready to adjust during the first few months.
