Casey Kruse, a Strathmore swimmer and Special Olympics athlete, took home some heavy metal from the Canada Summer Games in St. John's, Newfoundland.

By the end of her time at the event, Kruse took home two gold medals - one in the 100 metre freestyle and another in the 50 metre breaststroke.

"It was one of the best meets I have ever done in my lifetime," said Kruse. "There was so much competition and so many people I had never met before. It was so much fun."

Kruse also took home one silver and two bronze medals. She said her highlight was a tight competition with another swimmer from Manitoba.

"We shared the podium all the time together. Pretty much whatever gold I didn't get was what her golds were," added Kruse.

One of her highlights from the event was completing the 100 metre backstroke while suffering from an asthma attack due to the smoky air. Despite the challenge, it was this run where she received one of her bronze medals.

Following the competition, Kruse and her mother spent a week travelling around Newfoundland.

"It's so different because when you travel to Calgary, it's 45 minutes, but travelling from one place to another is a few hours. It was interesting seeing another type of land."

Kruse is now hoping to join the national team for Special Olympics Alberta. In the meantime, she'll be awaiting her return to the pool in mid-September.
