A new report from Saskatchewan Blue Cross suggests most residents in the province are overestimating their ability to navigate the health system, with two in three struggling to understand and use health information effectively.
The 2025 Health Literacy Report, released Wednesday, found 76 per cent of Saskatchewan residents believe they have stronger health literacy skills than they actually do. Researchers define health literacy as the ability to find, understand, and use health information and services to manage personal well-being or support others.
The findings were based on surveys, research, and community roundtables conducted across Saskatchewan in 2023 and 2024.
According to the report, 34 per cent of residents delayed treatment due to confusion or lack of information, while nearly one-third reported receiving incorrect care. Populations such as newcomers, Indigenous communities, youth, and seniors face greater barriers to accessing and understanding services.
While the results highlight significant gaps, the report points to opportunities for improvement. Suggested steps include expanding access to virtual care, increasing community-based resources, advancing mental health and wellness education, and strengthening navigation tools and culturally relevant supports.
“Health literacy is foundational to equitable access and care,” said Kelly Wilson, president and CEO of Saskatchewan Blue Cross. “This report is a call to action, aiming to catalyze positive change and make health literacy resources that offer information, guidance, and support widespread and accessible.”
Wilson said the insurer will continue working as a partner in prevention, a platform for community voice, and a funder of local initiatives.
“We invite all partners, peers, and citizens to join us in the work to advance health literacy to help ensure that every person in Saskatchewan has the knowledge, confidence, and support to make informed health decisions,” Wilson said. “Together, we can create a healthier, more empowered province.”
