The Varsity Sabres opened preseason play on a beautiful summer afternoon at AD Penner Park, taking on perennial powerhouse St. Paul’s Crusaders, but the scenery looked better than the scoreboard, which finished with a 20-0 win for the Crusaders.
The Sabres trailed 13–0 at halftime, but a highlight 50-yard catch-and-run from Mason Wiebe to Ben Webster set up a first-and-goal from the 3-yard line.
Despite the strong push, the Sabres were stopped short and turned the ball over on downs.
St. Paul’s later sealed the game with a pick-six, closing out the scoring at 20–0.
On defense, Dylan Godlewski set the tone with several big hits, including a sack and a forced fumble. Oliver Dueck also contributed with a sack. Offensively, Ben Webster led the team in receiving yards, while Wade Anderson sparked the ground game with several strong runs.
The Varsity Sabres kick off the regular season next Friday, September 5 at 4:00 p.m. at AD Penner Park against the Vincent Massey Vikings from Brandon.
