Artista Academy is starting a new theatre program, specifically tailored to high school students in grades 9 through 12.
Growing together
Gabriela Gallo, president of Artista Academy, says the organization is evolving.
“We used to be a grade two through grade eight program, and I just was seeing these students graduating and thinking, I would love to continue working with them,” she explains.
“And so, I thought, this is the year.”
From there, Artista Lumina was launched for grades nine, 10, 11 and 12.
Their debut performance? The Disney hit, High School Musical.
“High School Musical has so many different parts, so lots of opportunities for kids to shine,” she explains.
For younger ages, grades two through eight, the academy will be putting on the classic tale of Alladin.
Shooting for the stars
Before the show gets on the road, the academy is prepping its actors before they even audition.
“We have what’s called audition prep, which is a free thing that people can come to... We go through the audition package, learn a little bit of choreography,” she notes.
“It’s just a way for people to come in and see what they think about this whole atmosphere.”
Audition prep will take place at the Steinbach Arts Council.
Lumina’s High School Musical (grades nine through 12)
Free audition prep: Tuesday, Sept. 2, from 7:15 p.m. to 9:15 p.m.
Artista’s Alladin (grades two through eight):
Free audition prep: Saturday, Sept. 6, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
“Coming in is never going to hurt. Trying is never going to hurt. You're never going to look back and say, ‘Oh I wish I hadn’t done that.’ My advice would be, come and try it,” Gallo says.

More than a show
Beyond performance skills, Artisa Academy is about building a safe and supportive community.
“It’s a wonderful community we have at Artista, and the kids are the best of the best,” she says.
“I love them to pieces, and I think it’s a great community for any teenager to be a part of.”
Whether you’re a seasoned performer or just starting to explore the arts, Artistas Lumina is offering a chance to belong, to grow, and to create something unforgettable.
