HERSCHEL SMITH

Herschel Smith, 82, passed away August 27, 2025, at RUH in Saskatoon. He was born in Elrose, May 16, 1943, to Marshall and Alice Smith. Early years were spent on the farm at Sanctuary and later in Elrose. He eventually ended up back on the farm in 1965 until the present. He loved the land, trucks and his family.

Herschel spent several years driving trucks before he returned to the farm. That love of the semis never left him. In 1967, he and Myna Jackson were married and started their life on the farm together. They continued to farm until 2007 when Herschel’s heart condition forced him to retire. During those years they started a trucking company together as well as raising a family.

Greg arrived in 1968 and Wade in 1971. Our lives were busy with the farm, trucks, the boys and hockey. After the boys were grown and gone, we sold the trucks so we could travel. We spent many winters in Arizona, first in Lake Havasu then in Yuma. We made many good friends in both places and our “Group Happy Hours” were legendary! Herschel was very outgoing and made friends wherever he went. He loved telling stories, so if you are talking to someone who knew him - share a few stories. He would appreciate that. After he retired, his love of trucks and the farm started him restoring old trucks and tractors. He traveled to many car shows with his 57 GMC.

He was predeceased by his parents, Marshall and Alice, his sister Donna Carignan, his in-laws Stan and Golda Jackson, brother-in-law Ken Jackson, stepmother Rowena Smith and stepsister Donna Edwards. He is survived by his wife Myna, son Greg and Sonja, grandson Ashton; son Wade, grandsons Marshall and Jackson, brother and sister-in-law Gerald and Peggy Bidwell, sister-in-law Celeste Jackson, brother and sister-in-law Peter and Maureen Cumiskey, brother

and sister-in-law Chris and Kathy Barnes, his stepbrother Earl Tinney, his almost daughter (he called her “My Girl”) Glenna and Terry Sparks, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.

As per Herschel’s wishes there will be no funeral.
