It was a quick sprint for the Humboldt Broncos as they opened training camp on the weekend with their fall camp.
After Friday night’s Green and Gold, the top 40 players in camp battled for the Elgar Petersen Cup on Saturday between the Green and Gold squads.
It was a quick start for the Green team as Tyce Penrod opened the scoring about a minute into the game. Penrod was also a physical force during the scrimmage, delivering multiple hits in the first period.
The gold team tied the game in the first period as Brayden Skogstad pounced on a loose puck in front after Nick Kotai made an impressive toe save on the first opportunity.
In the second period, Skogstad scored his second goal of the game, taking advantage of a green turnover inside of their own zone.
Halfway through the second period, the teams switched their respective goalies with Charlie Tritt being replaced by Wyatt Fleischhacker and Kotai replaced by Nic Goodwin.
Rylan Hue added to the Gold’s lead in the third period with a rocket that travelled to the top corner.
The Green squad then staged their third period comeback. Oakley McIlwain’s point shot was deflected in front with both Rolan Amin and Jacob Kulas in the vicinity of where the puck was deflected.
Moments later, the green team tied the game in similar fashion as a shot from Amin was deflected by Kulas, tying the game up at 3-3.
With about five minutes remaining, the Green scored the go-ahead goal as Finn McGhie found Boston Schmidt on a breakaway pass. Schmidt was denied on the breakaway attempt but scored shortly afterwards on the second attempt.
A late surge by the Gold team, including pulling the goaltender in the final minute was not enough as the Green team were the 2025 winners of the Elgar Petersen Cup.
Fans will get their first chance to see the Broncos in the preseason on Saturday, when they host the Warman Wolverines.
