With students back in class across west-central Saskatchewan, Kindersley RCMP are reminding motorists to take extra care around schools and school buses.

Staff Sgt. Andrew with Kindersley RCMP said officers were present in Eatonia, Eston, Kindersley, and Rosetown on the first day of school to help ensure children arrived safely. While most drivers were cautious, police say they did notice some parents failing to stop when school bus lights were flashing and the stop arm was extended.

“When you see that stop sign come out, you need to stop in both directions,” Andrew said. “It doesn’t mean you can turn right to drop your kid off; you must wait until the sign goes down before continuing.”

He noted that Eatonia drivers had no reported issues on opening day, but in other communities, some warnings were issued.

RCMP are also asking drivers to be alert during morning drop-off times, between 8:00 and 9:15 a.m., when children are walking or biking to school.

Andrew said one young student was struck by a vehicle while heading to school, but fortunately was not seriously injured. Police say the incident was deemed an accident, and the child was wearing a helmet at the time.

“Motorists, remember these are little ones, they’re not always paying attention, they’re just trying to get to school,” Andrew said. “Slow down, watch for kids, and let’s make sure everyone gets to class safely.”

RCMP say they will continue monitoring school zones in the coming weeks and encourage residents to report any traffic safety concerns.
