The Strathmore Spartans had a tight game against the Drumheller Titans over the weekend.

The game took place up north on Friday (Aug. 29), ending in a 35-34 victory for the Spartans.

According to head coach Danny Warrack, the game became more tense as it progressed.

"We were up 14 points and they cut the lead to eight. In the last minute and a half, we kicked a punt through the end zone, giving us an extra point," said Warrack. "Sure enough, they stormed down the field and scored again. They kicked off, but couldn't get it in the end zone."

Warrack said that many of his players had never been in such a close game, with this being the tightest victory the Spartans have had in years.

"I think 2022 was the last time we played a lot of tight games, so this really helps the team grow."

Compared to their first game of the season against Catholic Central, Warrack said that he's seeing significant improvement in his players.

"The effort was a lot better, but there's still work to do."

As for what comes next, the Spartans have their home opener against Lethbridge on Thursday at 5 p.m., with the game taking place at the Strathmore High School football field.

Warrack named players Noah Robinson, Kiefer Jones, Ethan Heuver, and Edmund Hubbard for their effort during their first week of games.
