A school zone speed limit sign near Westberry School in Kindersley
Categories

The first day of school came with a few extra patrols from police as monitored school zone activity to ward off any poor driving behavior.

The Biggar RCMP were no different, as Sgt. Dereck Crozier gave this back-to-school reminder in the detachment's most recent report.

"It is that time of year again to remined ourselves with school zone safety while passing through or dropping off children. Slow down and be prepared to stop for the unanticipated actions of young ones.

Be aware of school bus traffic everywhere and watch for those flashing lights to be activated, if the lights are on, do not pass."

The Kindersley RCMP detachment sent officers all around the area, and school bus safety was also a major focus for Sgt. Andrews following the first day.

“When you see that stop sign come out, you need to stop in both directions,” Andrew said. “It doesn’t mean you can turn right to drop your kid off; you must wait until the sign goes down before continuing.”

Other school zone safety reminders are following the 30 km/h or otherwise posted speed limit. Doing that can help everyone's safety by providing more reaction time for both parties involved.

Making sure to watch out for kids riding their bikes is another reminder. It's a seasonal reminder, as once the bikes get put away there will be a whole new set of challenges with winter on the horizon.

Be proactive behind the wheel, and you can do your part to help keep school zones safe.
