Alberta RCMP say 1,661 traffic safety infractions were recorded during enhanced enforcement over the Labour Day long weekend.

From Aug. 29 to Sept. 1, officers issued 789 speeding tickets, 34 distracted driving tickets and 19 tickets for seatbelt violations.

Mounties also removed 99 impaired drivers from the road. Seventy drivers received Immediate Roadside Sanction (IRS) FAILs, while 19 received IRS WARNs.

Despite the enforcement effort, RCMP said there were 54 injury collisions during the holiday weekend, four of which were fatal.

“Fatal motor vehicle collisions are often avoidable,” Sgt. Darrin Turnbull of Alberta RCMP Traffic said in a statement. “We are reminded of this every long weekend when lives are lost due to factors such as drugs, alcohol, and speeding.”

Police are reminding drivers not to get behind the wheel while impaired, to delay travel in poor weather conditions and to give themselves extra time to reach their destination safely.

Alberta RCMP say traffic safety is a shared responsibility and urge the public to call 911 if they witness dangerous driving.
