Strathcona County won't be having as big of a New Year's Eve celebration as originally planned.

Initially, the county was going to host a variety of outdoor activities, games, dancers, snacks and a fireworks show on Dec.31.

While the fireworks display will still go off at 8 p.m., all other interactive activities have been cancelled.

"The safety of our staff and residents is a priority for Strathcona County. This difficult decision was made in response to both the rising risk of the Omicron variant in Alberta and the forecasted inclement weather conditions from Environment Canada," explained the county in a release.

Most of that week is expected to be in the -20s C and even getting below -30 C at night.

Residents are encouraged to watch the fireworks show from their vehicles at various parking lots surrounding Broadmoor Lake Park. The county recommends the Kinsmen Leisure Centre, Sherwood Park Arena and Sports Centre, Festival Place or St.Theresa School.

Washrooms are available between 7 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. at the Sherwood Park Arena, but this facility is for washroom use only and gathering inside is not permitted.

Transit bus shuttle services are no longer available for the event. Adjustments have been made to road closures in the area because of the fireworks.

Residents can also pick up edible art kits from Millennium Place and Glen Allan Recreation Complex between Dec.29-31 (while supplies last).
