Saskatchewan added 16,500 full-time jobs in August compared to the same month last year, with employment in the province reaching a record high.

The latest labour force numbers from Statistics Canada show 534,300 people were working full-time in August 2025, up 3.2 per cent year-over-year.

The province’s unemployment rate sat at 4.7 per cent, the lowest among all provinces and well below the national average of 7.1 per cent.

"Once again, with record job numbers and low unemployment, we have proven why we are the best place to live, work and raise a family in Canada," Deputy Premier and Immigration and Career Training Minister Jim Reiter said in a news release. "Our government is committed to ensuring that this growth continues and we have the labour force to support our strong economy."

Employment rose for both men and women, though women saw the larger increase. Jobs held by women were up 12,300, or 4.4 per cent, while men gained 3,900 jobs, a 1.2 per cent rise.

Both Regina and Saskatoon also reported growth compared to August 2024. Regina’s employment rose by 7,300 jobs, a five per cent increase, while Saskatoon added 1,900 jobs, up 0.9 per cent.

The health care and social assistance sector led year-over-year gains, adding 12,000 jobs, an increase of 12.8 per cent. Construction employment grew by 5,100 jobs, or 11.4 per cent, while accommodation and food services saw an increase of 4,600 jobs, or 15 per cent.

The province also reported growth in building permits and housing starts. Saskatchewan ranked second among provinces for year-over-year growth in the value of building permits in June 2025, and first in both year-to-date growth in permits and urban housing starts.

Provincial officials pointed to the government’s labour market and investment strategies as factors supporting the increase in employment.
