The opening weekend of high school football didn't disappoint as Unity, Rosetown, Biggar, and Kindersley all picked up wins to wrap up the first week of school.

Biggar took an exciting road win in Kerrobert to take first place in 1A six-aside play,  Rosetown and Unity tied at the top in 2A six-aside play after wins, while in nine-aside football the Kindersley Kobras won their first game in two years against the Meadow Lake Spartans.

Beginning with the Kobras, the 49-6 win against Meadow Lake represented the team's first win since late 2023 after a winless campaign in 2024. Kindersley returned to nine-aside play last season after 5+ years playing six-aside, Friday's win marking Kindersley's first of the 2020's.

The Kobras 1-0 record placed them in a tie for first in SHSAA Conference 4 with Humboldt, the team that welcomed the Kobras back to the nine-aside realm last season. Humboldt defeated North Battleford's JPII Crusaders 43-14 in the other Week 1 game, the Delisle Rebels idle.

In six-aside action, there was only one 1A game this weekend in Kerrobert, but it didn't disappoint.

The Rebels had a first half lead before the visiting Biggar Blazers made it disappear, managing to hold off the home team for a down to the wire win 32-30.

The other six-aside conference saw all four teams in action as 2A play started Thursday in Eatonia, where the home Spartans lost 60-36 to an always strong Rosetown team led by head coach Mitch Wintonyk. Another game on Friday sent Unity down to Maple Creek, where the road Warriors won 56-15 to tie Rosetown in the early season standings.

The Macklin Sabres and Plenty Wildcats were slated for a Week 1 matchup according to the SHSAA website, but the Sabres Facebook page says otherwise with their home opener set for this Friday evening against Kerrobert.

Other games coming up in Week 2 see Plenty hosting Biggar on Thursday, and then that same day in 2A, Eatonia will host Unity to open Week 2, things continuing on Friday with Rosetown home to Maple Creek.

Kindersley is on a bye week as it will be the Delisle Rebels turn to take the field. They head to Humboldt for a game on Friday night, after Meadow Lake plays JPII after school on Thursday.
