A 23-year-old Alberta man is facing charges after fleeing police in a stolen vehicle and nearly colliding with an RCMP cruiser in southwestern Saskatchewan.

Leader RCMP say they received a report around 8 p.m. on Sept. 4 of a suspicious vehicle parked at a community facility in Burstall. The vehicle matched the description of one that had earlier evaded Alberta RCMP.

When officers attempted a traffic stop, the driver sped off, narrowly missing the police vehicle before heading east on Highway 321.

Mounties deployed a tire deflation device south of Eatonia, which the suspect drove over before continuing at a reduced speed until the vehicle became disabled. Police say the man fled on foot but was arrested shortly after.

Investigators later determined the vehicle had been reported stolen in Brooks, Alta.

Hayden Nester of Cold Lake, Alta., is charged with flight from a peace officer, possession of stolen property under $5,000, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and resisting arrest.

He is scheduled to appear in Swift Current provincial court on Sept. 9.

Maple Creek and Kindersley RCMP assisted in the investigation.
