Two members of Macklin EMS took a leap of faith to raise money for a children’s charity.

Paramedics Terri Murrell and Jennifer Arlitt joined the Jump for Charity event over the weekend, skydiving for the first time to support Teddy Bears Anonymous, an organization that provides stuffed animals to children in hospital.

Murrell said the conditions for her first jump couldn’t have been better.

“What a beautiful morning for a jump,” she said. “I’ve never jumped before, but as far as weather goes, it couldn’t have been more perfect. Everything just went so smooth.”

She added that despite the nerves, she felt calm in the plane until the moment came to exit.

“It was actually hard to get out of the airplane itself. But once we went, all I can describe it is euphoria. It was like time was standing still,” Murrell said.

Arlitt joked she took a more “graceful” leap compared to Murrell’s enthusiastic fall. Both agreed the tandem instructors made the experience safe and unforgettable.

“They were absolutely incredible with us through the whole thing,” Murrell said. “I always felt like I was in the best hands, which made it so much easier to follow through with it.”

The event was also a fundraising success. Macklin EMS raised over $14,000 through donations, a community barbecue, and support from local groups.

“In our little community here of Macklin, everybody has been very gracious,” Murrell said. “We’re very grateful for everyone who five dollars at a time helped us out.”

She added that the Kinettes donated $2,500 early in the campaign, helping momentum build.

The teddy bears purchased with the funds will be distributed to children in need, a mission started by Teddy Bears Anonymous founder Luke Lawrence. Arlitt noted Lawrence’s book Erin’s Gift shares the story of his daughter Erin and the origins of the charity.

For Murrell, the experience was life-changing.

“On Saturday, I did say no, I wouldn’t do it again,” she said with a laugh. “But if it ever came about again, I think I would do it again, especially for Teddy Bears Anonymous.”
