The Steinbach Minor Hockey Association (SMHA) is making sure everyone gets time on the ice.

Come and try

On Sunday, Sept. 14, from 3 to 5 p.m., SMHA is hosting a U9 Co-ed Come Try Hockey Event for kids aged nine and under.

Ryan Canada, vice president of SMHA, says this will be a great chance for kids to get on the rink and experience hockey.

“We’re not expecting anyone to pay any money," Canada notes.

Although this event is free of charge, participants must bring their own equipment: skates, helmet and a stick.

“If all of a sudden you don’t have a stick, let us know and we’ll try to make sure we have a stick there that you can try.”

Calling all girls!

In addition, SMHA is hosting a girls-only Come Try Hockey Event, for ages five to 13 — taking place the same day, on Sept. 14, at 1 p.m.

“I love how female hockey has evolved... It’s just opening the doors for these girls,” says Canada.

His daughter, 10-year-old Everly, says it’s a fun way to learn and make new friends.

“It’s really fun to play girls’ hockey because you meet a lot of girls,” Everly explains.

She notes her favourite skills are stick handling and shooting.

Canada notes coaches will be on hand to guide attendees, and some of the current female players will also be helping out.

The girl power doesn’t stop there! SMHA has a new U9 all-girls team.
