Uh-oh, parents — October 6 is looming, and if Alberta teachers officially go on strike, that means one thing: the kids are home. All. Day. Long.

Before you start stress-Googling “how much screen time is too much?” or frantically pricing out last-minute tropical getaways, don’t worry — Cochrane has plenty of ways to keep those little whirlwinds of energy entertained. Here’s how to turn strike days into fun days.

1. Wear Them Out at the SLS Centre

Nothing says “peace and quiet later” like a full-on energy burn. The SLS Centre has a pool, gym, and tons of space for kids to run, splash, and climb until they collapse into a blissful nap. Bonus: you can grab a coffee while pretending you’re at a spa.

2. Get Crafty at Messy Moose Studio

For the days when you just can’t deal with glitter in your carpet, outsource the mess! Messy Moose Studio is perfect for painting, crafts, and creative chaos — and you don’t even have to clean up afterward. It’s basically magic.

3. Catch a Matinee at Cochrane Movie House

Sometimes, sitting quietly in the dark with popcorn is exactly what everyone needs. Check out a kid-friendly flick at Cochrane Movie House and call it “educational” — films are art, after all.

4. Hit the New BMX Track

Got a little daredevil? Grab the bikes and head to Cochrane’s new BMX track. They’ll burn off adrenaline while you get cool parent points for letting them “send it.” Helmets required — bravery optional.

5. Picnic & Play at Riverfront Park

Pack a lunch, bring a soccer ball, and let nature do the heavy lifting. Riverfront Park has space to roam, playgrounds to conquer, and plenty of spots for you to sip coffee and supervise from a safe distance.

6. Check out the Cochrane Public Library

The library isn’t just books anymore. With storytimes, puzzles, games, and activities, it’s like a low-key indoor amusement park — plus, it’s free. Bonus: you might trick your kids into learning something while they think they’re just having fun.

Parenting Pro Tip:

If all else fails, there’s always the “good old-fashioned chore Olympics.” Whoever folds the most laundry wins a prize. (The prize is more laundry.)

While a teachers’ strike might throw a wrench in your routine, Cochrane has plenty of kid-friendly activities to keep everyone happy — or at least, busy. And hey, when in doubt, remember: bedtime is non-negotiable.
