Joyce Kelly Obituary

December 18, 1926 – September 12, 2025

Joyce went to be with the Lord peacefully this week at the age of 98. She was predeceased by her husband Lorne Kelly who passed away in 2016 in their 65th year of marriage. Joyce was the last surviving child of Gilbert and Delia Quaale (nee Larson). Her older siblings were Floyd Quaale, Florence Slavinski, Glen Quaale, Audrey Haryett, Mae Findley and Gordon Quaale. The Quaales were blessed with longevity with Joyce’s eldest sister Florence living to an age of 103. Sadly though, Joyce’s two eldest brothers, Floyd and Glen both died before the age of 2. Her youngest sister, Yvonne Boese passed in February of this year.  Joyce was also predeceased by her eldest son, James (Jim) in 2011 and Jim’s wife, Janet, last July.

Joyce is survived by four of her five sons and their wives, Fred and Donna, Greg and Tammy, George and Karen, and Dean and Kim. Joyce loved doting on her thirteen grandchildren, Jennifer (Clint) Porritt, Justina (Josh), de Groot, Melissa (Tim) Hurlbut, Matthew (Ana) Kelly, Megan (Dallas) Marriott, Jason (Catherine) Kelly, Angie (Mike) Makway, Lori (Beric) Haukaas, Jamie (Thomas) Schneider, Nigel (Amy) Kelly, Mark (Emily) Kelly, Aidan (fiancé Kennedy Milne) Kelly and Emily Kelly. From these grandchildren, Joyce was blessed with 26 great grandchildren.

Joyce was born in Weldon SK, December 18, 1926. That year her family moved to Saskatoon, resulting in her being raised a ‘city girl’ during the depression. After high school, Joyce attended Briercrest Bible School from (1944 to 1947). There she met Lorne, who attended the same school from 1945 through 1948. Although they were acquainted during those years, they didn’t start dating until several years later. After bible school Joyce enrolled in the nursing program at Saskatoon City Hospital with the intention of being a missionary. She graduated from nursing school in 1950. In the winters of ’49 and ’50, Lorne worked in Saskatoon. They started dating in the winter of 1950 and were married in January of 1952.

Joyce the ‘city girl’ moved to the Kelly farm house, which had neither central heating or plumbing. The transition to farm life was difficult, but she jumped in with both feet, raising five boys on the farm in addition to feeding boarders and hired farm hands, while also working part-time in the Dodsland Hospital as a fill-in nurse.

Although Joyce would describe herself as an introvert, she nonetheless had a gift of hospitality and was a great cook who enjoyed entertaining friends and family. She was known for her quiet, yet happy, spirit ready to greet everyone with a warm inviting smile.

Joyce enjoyed gardening, both vegetable gardening on the farm and later flower and landscape gardening at the house in Dodsland. She also enjoyed reading and was a formidable Scrabble player.

Joyce was very active in her church and often held Vacation Bible School and Good News Clubs in her home, which were popular with the children in town. Joyce and Lorne also hosted bible studies with friends from three churches in Dodsland.

Joyce will be missed, but with many wonderful memories and immense gratitude for the legacy she left us of kindness, love and faith in her Saviour, Jesus Christ.
