Schools and child care centres across Canada have a new opportunity to bring learning outdoors with the launch of the OutClass™ Outdoor Classroom Giveaway Contest, offering a $25,000 prize to create an outdoor learning space.
Organized by Bienenstock Natural Playgrounds (BNP), the contest aims to encourage educators to reconnect children with nature, which studies show can improve test scores, retention, and physical and mental well-being.
“Nature brings a change of perspective: learning becomes stickier because multiple senses are engaged, students are more focused, and teachers see the effects carried back indoors,” said John El-Raheb, CEO of BNP. “All it takes is 60 minutes outside.”

Since its inception, the contest has received over 25,000 entries, highlighting strong interest in outdoor learning spaces. Previous winners, including Champlain Discovery Public School in Pembroke, Ont., have already seen the benefits. Tricia Robinson, vice principal of the school, said students gain skills in collaboration, creativity, and problem-solving while learning outside.
The 2025 contest is open now and runs until May 11, 2026. Educators, parents, and community members are encouraged to nominate their school or child care centre to take part.
