Ronald 'Percy' Prouty

JUNE 22, 1974 – DECEMBER 27, 2021

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of our brother, uncle, father, son, and friend Ronald PERCY Prouty on December 27th, 2021 following a lengthy illness. Born in Minaki on June 22, 1974 to Clifford George Prouty and Katherine Helen Prouty, Percy spent most of his life living in Kenora and Wabaseemoong First Nation. Percy will be lovingly remembered by his sons Shayne Prouty, Justin Chartrand (Anna) and his special Buddeee Paisley. He will be deeply missed by his mother, Kathy Prouty, and his siblings, Audrey Mandamin, Dan (Debbie), Sandra (Roger), Jordan (Stephanie), Doris and Darin (Allysa) Prouty; his Nephews and Nieces, Creed (Kendra), Gillian, Cassie Henry (Trevor), Danika, Lynden, Teagan, Dustyn, Phoenix, Ayden Mandamin, Lee, Alex Henry, Hudson, Aliisia and Dane Prouty and great nieces and Kairi and Courage; his Aunts and Uncles, Joe, Gladys (Philip) and Ronnie Mandamin; his extended Prouty family from near and far, as well as many more cousins and extended family - too many to mention, but just as valued by him. He will also be missed by his special friends Naomi and David Moostoos and many more cherished friends that had been a part of his life’s journey.

Percy was predeceased by his father George Prouty, Aunts Doris, Christine Mandamin, Josephine Wesley, niece Sondra and nephew Joel Mandamin, and many other cousins and family members.

An outgoing and active person, Percy engaged in many after school activities in his youth such as volley ball and hockey. As well as participating in social and academic groups such as math clubs and native youth organizations. Proud of his Indigenous heritage, Percy “Ma`iingan” of the Pelican Clan embraced the teachings of his elders and often sought guidance and healing in the traditions. Percy had the opportunity to work in many fields of employment. During school and over summer vacations he worked as a deck hand for Walsten Air, a fishing guide at Sabourin lodge, a part time on-call child protection worker for Weechi-it-te-win Family Services, and as a cable technician for Norcom Cablevision. Following school, Percy continued to work at Norcom before leaving to pursue his one of his lifelong dreams of becoming a warranted police officer in the province of Ontario for his home community of Wabaseemong and surrounding areas. Following his time in the OPP First Nation and the Treaty Three Police services, Percy became a child protection worker with several care agencies in the region. Eventually he realized another dream and became a licensed transport truck driver and tow truck operator for Godbout’s Towing. Several years later, Percy returned to the social work field and became a Child Care Protection worker for Anishinaabe Abinooji Family Services until illness forced him to retire. Percy was especially proud of the accomplishments of his sons, Shayne Prouty, who became captain of the Beaver Brae football team, and Justin Chartrand, who excelled in high school and junior hockey leagues. It was also important for Percy to take care of his mom and he would often help her out with whatever she needed. Through and through, family - and those he considered family - were his priority in his life.

In his private life, Percy’s love of sport and his love for children lead him to assume the coaching duties of several organized soccer and hockey teams in the Kenora area over the years. When he wasn’t coaching, Percy enjoyed rebuilding and repurposing yard sale finds, tinkering around a garage, golfing, and in the last year, fishing with his good friend David Moostoos and sister Audrey Mandamin. Many of our memories with Percy will be reflections of the adventures we all had with him at one point in our lives; he leaves us with many fond memories. Percy was known to many who knew him as a friendly, kind, and compassionate person with a big heart. He had a way of making people laugh with his unique and personable humor. Percy seemed to know the magic in caring and helping you through your challenges, and always worked at putting those in need before him. We will miss his laughter, his smile, and his warm and loving hugs and encouraging words to “Keep your stick on the ice”.

In spite of his failing health, Percy always did his best to be brave, to keep a smile on his face, and lend support to his family and friends to the very end. He will truly be missed in our lives. To our man of steel, and our superman, we are honored and grateful that you stayed and fought as long as you did.

We would like to thank Wabaseemoong Chief and Council, Kenora Chief’s Advisory, Anishinaabe Abinooji Family Services, Treaty Three Police Service, Super 8, and the people who came and gave the family support during our difficult time.

A special thank you to the nurses in the dialysis unit at the LWDH for taking such good care of our Percy, he spoke of you all fondly during the rides to get coffee and donuts for you before his appointments.
