Albert Toth

JUNE 21, 1932 – JANUARY 5, 2022

“He was such a good man”.

That's what you're most likely to hear from those who knew him, and it's so very true.

Albert Frank Toth, 89, passed away peacefully on his terms at the Lake of the Woods District Hospital on Wednesday, January 5, 2022. He was lovingly surrounded by his dear wife of 64 years, Doreen and his three children Anne, Marilyn, and Darren. We lost our everything.

Albert was born on June 21, 1932, on his family’s farm near Mankota, Saskatchewan. He was the fifth of ten children born to Andrew and Agnes Toth. He loved growing up with his large family and learned at an early age that the secret to survival at meal time was to be a “fast-eater”.

Soon after his arrival in Kenora, Albert started work at Barney’s Ball Lake Lodge as a fishing guide where he met the love of his life, Doreen. Later he began employment with Boise Cascade Paper Mill, followed by their marriage and starting a family. Albert worked long and hard to provide a good life for his family. He was employed by the Boise Cascade Paper Mill for over 33 years until his retirement in 1990. Albert was most happy at his home on the Winnipeg River where he could boat and fish, and enjoy the great outdoors with his family and friends to his heart’s content. He was passionate about fishing, teaching us how to bait, cast, net, and filet our fish. But only he could fry those Walleye to perfection! Papa also loved towing his grandkids around the lake in the tube, revelling in their screams of laughter as he cut through the waves. All the grandkids adored their “Papa”. Each one had a very special bond with him.

Albert loved his curling. He skipped his men’s and mixed teams to win several bonspiels at the Keewatin and Kenora curling clubs. His curling highlight was defeating Al Hackner in a mixed curling bonspiel! Many fun-filled vacations to Hawaii, Cuba, and Mexico were enjoyed by Albert and Doreen. They also wintered in Florida for several wonderful years, entertaining family and meeting new friends.

Albert was predeceased by his infant son, Michael Albert; his parents, Andrew and Agnes; his siblings, Lloyd, Dezso, Joe, Steve, Margaret, Edward and Elizabeth; and his very special companion and side-kick, Angel.

He is survived by his loving wife Doreen and daughters, Anne, Marilyn (Jim) Burkitt, and son, Darren (Cathy) Toth. Papa is beloved by his four grandchildren Kyle, Breanne, Cody, and Kelsey. He will be sadly missed by his sisters, Mattie and Hilda, and fondly remembered by his nieces, nephews, extended family and many good friends.

The family would like to thank the doctors and 2nd floor nurses at the Lake of the Woods District Hospital, for their compassionate and extraordinary care of Albert. Special thanks to Char for her outstanding care and support during our time of need. Thanks also to Deacon Earl Johnson for his spiritual guidance and comforting words.

Due to the current Covid restrictions, a private Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, January 22nd, 2022, at 11:00 am (by invitation only) at Notre Dame Catholic Church, 222 First St. N., Kenora, ON. If desired, a donation in memory of Albert may be made to a charity of choice.

A celebration of life and interment of ashes will be held in the summer of 2022.

Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.brownfuneralhomekenora.com for the Toth family.
