The Kenora area is expected to get hit with 10 to 15 cm of snow, along with 60 km/h wind gusts that will cause poor driving conditions for motorists.
Kenora OPP Provincial Constable, Jason Canfield offered some safety tips when driving in these winter conditions.
“We just want to remind people to plan ahead, take your time when you’re going places. The roads do have ice on them,” Canfield said.
The storm that is making its way east across the prairies has already caused the TransCanada Highway to close from Hadashville to Winnipeg due to near white-out conditions.
“I know the road crews are doing their best to keep up with the heavy snowfall, but there is ice that forms underneath that you may not see with the snow on top of it.”
Canfield concluded by saying for drivers to make sure to drive to road conditions so everyone can get home safely.
Environment Canada is saying poor weather conditions may contribute to transportation delays. Be prepared to adjust your driving with changing road conditions.
If visibility is reduced while driving, slow down, watch for tail lights ahead and be prepared to stop. Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways, and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow.
The region is currently under an extreme cold warning that will bring wind chill values near minus 40 overnight and Wednesday morning.
A passing cold front will have overnight temperatures drop to between minus 26 to minus 30 degrees. Gusty winds in combination with the cold temperatures will lead to wind chills near minus 40. Wind chill values are expected to moderate for Wednesday afternoon.
