Kurt Heinrich

APRIL 21, 1930 – JANUARY 19, 2022

The family of Kurt Heinrich announce his passing on January 19, 2022 at the Waterford Retirement Residence in Ottawa, Ontario. Kurt was 91 years old.

Kurt is survived by his four children – Hal (Meg), Dana (Tim), Kati, and Sue (Andrew) and he will be greatly missed. He will be lovingly remembered especially by his two grandchildren James and Lily. He was predeceased by his wife, Hilde and will be missed by numerous relatives and friends in Germany, Florida and the Niagara region. He was also predeceased by his companion Ruth Walz.

Kurt was born in Chursdorf, Germany on April 21, 1930 and moved to Teufelshof following WWII where he met and married Hilde on December 27, 1952. They emigrated to Canada and settled in St. Catharines where Kurt worked in the Niagara farming community for several years. Kurt had many passions in his life and his garden was a source of great pride, pleasure, and sustenance for his family. He loved the outdoors and was an avid fisherman, an inventive and enthusiastic camper, and enjoyed an active lifestyle – playing tennis, going on hikes, roller blading in his 70’s, canoeing, skating, and skiing. He was a devoted skat player and often seemed to have the luck of the cards. He had an affinity for most games (chess, backgammon, cribbage, Euchre, dominos) and enjoyed reading. He was skilled at woodworking, learned to make a delicious rotisserie lamb later in life, and he made the best martinis! A lifetime dream of his was realized when he took a trip in a glider at the age of 85. He had watched the gliders at an airport as a teenager.

Kurt had an outgoing personality and made lifelong friends wherever he went. He was strong, determined, and stubborn, and these characteristics helped him to overcome obstacles and establish a successful and satisfying life. He was a firm and loving father with a generous spirit and he welcomed our friends into his home. His grandchildren were a great source of happiness and pride and he was an involved and active grandfather despite the physical distance from James and Lily. He loved animals and enjoyed meeting Dana’s puppy Raven in the last few months of his life.

He will be missed by many people, far and wide.
