City of Kenora crews is still plowing through the 23 cm (9 inches) of the snow that fell in a 42-hour period last weekend leaving the city a big mess to clean up.

Kevin Gannon, Director of Engineering and Infrastructure says crews have been hard at work clearing the priority streets following the event.

“They have removed the majority of the snow on Priority 1, and Priority 2 routes and they’re still out there trying to do clean-up,” says Gannon.

Gannon added the team will use the next few days of snow-free weather to continue clean-up around the city.

“It looks like we might have a reprieve until Saturday and we’re going to try and work on some of these snowbanks that we haven’t had the opportunity or time to get to due to the number of events we’ve had,” added Gannon.

The massive dump of snow caused the city to call its third Significant Weather Event of the winter, and the second time in February, which is a way to advise residents to expect delays with snow clearing work and to expect that roads and sidewalks will be slick.

The city currently is snow-clearing the areas of Park Street, and Second Street South this week, and will inform residents with public notices before commencing clearing operations in their area.

Once snowbanks and piles are cleared they will be transported to one of three snow disposal sites strategically place around the city Gannon says.

“We have one here at our operations building, and one at the west and east ends of the city.”

Gannon noted though the area has seen an above-average amount of snow none of the three sites are at risk of being at full capacity.

February alone has gotten 79.4 cm of snow, with a total for the whole winter of 206.7 cm, which is about 20 per cent more than the previous winter.
