The Fort Saskatchewan U15 AAA Rangers took a moment to pay tribute to Ukraine.

They played the Ukrainian national anthem before their game on Sunday (Feb.27) and allowed players to hold the Ukrainian flag on the blue line. According to Tyson Munro, U15 head coach, they were inspired by a local Ukrainian family and players of Ukrainian descent in light of the current situation in the country.

“I thought [it was] a nice little heartfelt opportunity, as little as it is, but a pretty special moment,” he said. “It seems everybody in Alberta is Ukranian in some way.”

Munro added they’re always encouraging the players to contribute and be involved with the community.

The U15 Rangers just wrapped up their regular season, finishing in second place in the North Division and third place overall in the league. Rangers forward Kale Dach took the Alberta Elite Hockey League scoring title, with the next leading scorer being 31 points behind.

Their first playoff game will be March 10 against the Southgate Lions.
