The Sturgeon Public Schools board has announced its new superintendent.
Shawna Walter has been the acting superintendent since November. She first became a teacher in 1992 and worked in four different school divisions before joining Sturgeon Public Schools.
"We have to be able to have successes together and failures together and keep moving forward, and so I think that for me, that's one of the skills that I do bring. Leadership is a skill, and it's something I have to work on every single day to be a good leader. So I'm just very excited. I love Sturgeon," Walter said. "It's a fantastic school division, so I'm very excited to have this opportunity."
Walter started as a teacher with the school division in 2007 and has since served as a vice-principal, principal, director and associate superintendent.
She will become the new superintendent effective Sept.1.
"I think that I have a good understanding of our communities. I've spent a lot of time getting out into schools, connecting with our principles, and just getting to truly understand the needs of our schools and celebrate successes."
Being born and raised in southern Alberta and attending rural schools as a child, Walters understands how the system is different from urban schools and hopes to ensure the needs of the schools are met.
Walter added she looks forward to working more with the staff, students and families and continuing to grow those relationships and trust.
