The City of Fort Saskatchewan is giving funding to some local groups.

Their Tourism Hosting Grant program looks for local non-profits that are planning to host a big event. The event must be at the provincial level or higher and be beneficial to the community.

"What's exciting about this year is that we're finally able to award our grants because we haven't been able to do that as a result of the pandemic," said Heather Cowie, manager of community and protective services.

The Wild Rose Old Tyme Fiddlers Association has been awarded $3,500 to host the 2022 Grand North American Old Time Fiddle Championships on July 14-17 at the Shell Theatre. Up to 500 people are expected to come to the competition over the course of the weekend with competitors coming from across Alberta and western Canada.

From Mar.24-27, the Fort Saskatchewan U15 AAA Enhance It Rangers will be hosting the Hockey Alberta Provincial Championships at the JRC. It is also expecting a crowd of 500 people with hockey teams from around the province and the city gave them $2,000 for the event.

Lastly, the Fort Saskatchewan Senior Hockey Team has been awarded $2,000 and will be hosting the Hockey Alberta Senior AA Provincials. It is going from Apr.7-10 at the JRC and could bring up to 1,000 people.

The Fort Saskatchewan Tourism Hosting Grant Program is still accepting applications. You can fill out a submission form here.
