It's been a difficult two years for schools.

School districts had to quickly adjust to new health measures being added to keep kids safe, occasionally moving classes online and frequently having students and staff absent because of illness or needing to quarantine.

However, the provincial government has lifted most public health restrictions in Alberta and schools are able to get back to normal operations again.

"There is always a mixed reaction as we do have some [people] that are ready and others that may not be too ready yet. We're going to be respecting both sides. I know it's been a long journey for everyone and everybody is really quite thirsty for getting back to what normal is and doing those things," said Trina Boymook, board chair of Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS).

A lot of their students are excited to get to go on field trips again. Audiences can also come to watch sports games and theatre performances.

The Grade 12 students should also haveĀ a proper graduation ceremony at the end of the year.

"I want to thank all our families and our students and our staff for all that they've done to bring us to this point where we can remove these restrictions and return to some of these things that we certainly appreciate as part of our education system."

Schools will be able to hold open houses again, so families with children that are moving schools will get to check out the facility properly before their child attends.

"I think that staff did a great job in the interim, but nothing replaces being able to do it in person."

Classes also no longer have to cohort going forward and masks are not mandatory.
