The Ministry of Transportation says highways are mostly snow covered throughout much of the region.

Local roads and highways are slick across much of northwestern Ontario today, and the icy conditions caused an early morning collision on Highway 17 this morning near Dryden.

Around 1:30 a.m., emergency responders were on the scene of a single-vehicle collision involving a commercial motor vehicle, which had swerved to avoid wildlife and slid into the ditch. Both occupants were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

The Ministry of Transportation notes the conditions caused another collision near Vermilion Bay, where a disabled vehicle had blocked the westbound lane. They say highways are mostly snow-covered throughout much of the region.

The OPP is reminding residents to drive with caution and drive according to conditions. Residents can check highway conditions at www.ontario.ca/511.

Environment Canada’s Special Weather Statement for the Kenora, Sioux Narrows-Nestor Falls, Grassy Narrows, Whitedog and Morson areas has now ended, however, they have issued a new Snowfall Warning for Dryden, Vermilion Bay, Ignace and English River.

Meteorologists are now calling for between 15 and 20 centimetres of snow tonight, mixed with rain. Reduced visibility is expected.
