Sophia Wynarchuk

It is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the passing of Sophia Wynarchuk, aged 98, on Thursday, April 7, 2022.

Sophia is survived by her daughter, Margaret; her sisters Olga Cooke of Brockville, Sister Rose Muskoluck of Edmonton, Patricia Kearney of Brampton; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband William Wynarchuk; her sisters Anna Biczok, Mary Horbaty, Catherine Gogal; and her brothers Mike and Peter Moskoluk.

Sophia was born in Kenora, Ontario, on February 1, 1924. She spent much of her life living in Kenora.

She married William Wynarchuk in 1951 and they moved to Camp Robinson, where they resided for four years, then to Winnipeg for the next three years. In 1958, they returned to Kenora where Sophia lived until 2006. At that time, she moved to Richmond Hill to live with her daughter Margaret. In 2013, Sophia moved into a long term care facility in Richmond Hill, where she resided until her death.

Sophia was an active church goer and was a member of St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church in Kenora for many, many years. She was also a member of the Ukrainian Catholic Women’s League both in Kenora and in Thornhill.

Sophia enjoyed gardening and while living in Kenora, always had a large vegetable garden. This gave her great pleasure. Sophia enjoyed being outdoors and loved to go for leisurely walks enjoying all that Nature could offer. In her later years, Sophia enjoyed doing jigsaw puzzles and would spend many hours working on them. Over the years, she finished many hundreds of these puzzles. It was a hobby which also gave her much pleasure.

Prayers will be said at Brown Funeral Home & Cremation Centre on Tuesday, May 3, 2022 at 1:00 pm with interment following at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery.
