Statistics Canada's latest release of federal census data from 2021 gives an insight into the age of Fort Saskatchewan's residents.
Fort Saskatchewan's working-age demographic (15-64) makes up 66.2 per cent of the population, while children 0-14 years old represent 20.8 per cent of the population.
Those over 65 make up 13.1 per cent, up from 11.1 per cent reported in the 2016 census.
Over 85’s make up 1.5 per cent, while centenarians are the smallest demographic, making up only five people per the 2021 census.
The rise in retirement-age Canadians comes as the Baby Boom generation begins to retire. More than 1 in 5 Canadians are close to retirement, that is, those aged 55 to 64, which is an all-time high in the history of Canadian censuses.
Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta are the only provinces in the country where children under the age of 15 still outnumber persons aged 65 and older.
While ageing, Canada still has one of the youngest populations among the G7 countries, after the United States and the United Kingdom.
Fort Saskatchewan’s population grew by 12 per cent between 2016 and 2021, from 24,169 to 27,088.
The average age of Fort Saskatchewan’s population is 37.2 years old.
