Firefighters struggled with a Sherwood Park house fire over the weekend.
Around 2:56 p.m. on Sunday (May 8), Strathcona County Emergency Services got a 911 call for a garden shed fire near Harmony Place and Highland Way. It was very windy outside which was causing the fire to spread to the house.
Once crews arrived, they found the blaze had made its way into the attic with the flames being accelerated by the wind. Firefighters learned everyone had gotten out safely and then made their way inside.
They were able to get the fire under control in under an hour; however, the flames damaged the gas metre on the side of the house which caused a small gas leak. ATCO had to be brought in to isolate the leak and crews were on the scene until after 7 p.m.
During the attack, some ceiling drywall also came down on top of one of the firefighters. Fortunately, he wasn't injured.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
