Saskatchewan's own Patrick Marleau announced he is hanging up the skates for good.

The 42-year-old hasn't played since the end of the 2020-21 campaign with the San Jose Sharks, a club he spent 20 of his 23 seasons with.

"It’s bittersweet for sure, but I have so much to look forward to," he said in a letter this morning posted on The Players' Tribune. "Who knows what the world has in store for me."

Marleau holds the NHL's all-time regular-season games played record at 1,779, slightly ahead of another Saskatchewan product Gordie Howe by 12.

"It was never something I aimed for; it was just me loving this game so much that I never, ever wanted to hang up my skates," he said.

The former Swift Current Minor Hockey player racked up 566 goals and 1,197 points between San Jose, Toronto, and Pittsburgh in his illustrious career.
