High school track and field competition returned to Cochrane, and other surrounding High Schools on Tuesday, with the Cochrane Cobras continuing to out pace the rest of the field.
As an overall team the Cobras scored 1,015 points, which was easily good enough for first place, setting them well ahead of the next closest team, George McDougall High School who finished with 526 points.
Some standouts for the female athletes were Kasi Trenke, who took home first place in the senior girls 100, and 200 metre dashes, the 4x100 relay, as well as snagging gold in the 80 metre hurdles event.
Faith Solecki, was also on the first place 4x100 relay team. Solecki also accomplished a clean sweep of the jumping events taking home first place in the high, long, and triple jump.
On the men's side, Evan Ficzere, and Raymond Belanger had great success in the jumping events for the Cobras. Ficzere and Belanger tied in the senior boy's high jump event each achieving a bar height of 1.80 metres, with Ficzere taking the gold due to a fault by Belanger. In senior boys triple jump Belanger edged out Ficzere, with the two of them jumping to a distance of 13.10 metres, and 12.24 metres respectively to take home first, and second place. Belanger would also finish first in the senior boys long jump, tallying a final jump measured at 6.40 metres, while Ficzere won gold in the discus throw event, throwing a distance of 27.98 metres.
For the second place George McDougall High School, Jacob Lysak won the senior boys 100, and 200 metre dashes Lysak also took home gold as a part of the men's 4x100 metre relay.
The next step towards provincials for Cochrane High athletes will come at zones this Tuesday, at Foothills Athletic Park, in Calgary.
