Sewage inspection coming to Cochrane

The Town of Cochrane has announced today that in the coming weeks town crews will be conducting sewage inspections via remote controlled closed circuit televisions (CCTV).

Town crews will be in the middle of the streets in various neighbourhoods driving these CCTV cameras down the sewage lines to look for areas of concern, things such as cracks, breaks, or sags in the piping system.

As work progresses throughout Cochrane the town says that traffic will be minimally impacted. No service outages are expected.

Crossfield Demolition Derby is back!

"Smash em' crash em' electric action" returns to Crossfield Saturday, August 27th as the Crossfield Elks Demolition Derby returns for another year of carnage.

At the grounds there will be food trucks and liquor sales. Gates open at 11 a.m. and the derby starts at 3 p.m. A cabaret will take place afterwards with a live DJ.

Entry to the event is $20 per person. Kids 12 and under get in for free.

Empty Bowls Fundraiser a success.

The Cochrane Activettes announced today that this years empty bowls fundraiser raised $2425.

People from across Cochrane purchased the bowls made from leftover clay from Saffron Studios in Cochrane.

The funds raised from the fundraiser will be going to the Cochrane Food Bank, which is ran by the Cochrane Activettes.

Prescribed fire planned for Banff today

Banff National Park has announced that if the conditions are right Parks Canada will be continuing a controlled burn on 1571 Hectares of land in the Alexandra River Valley today.

The purpose of the fire is to return the historic fire cycle in valley, the valley hasn't experienced a fire in 280 years, usually a fire occurs every 100-150 years to rejuvenate the landscape. Also, the prescribed fire will better the habitat for grizzly bears and whitebark pine.

Paved pathway being built to connect Sunset Ridge

The Town of Cochrane has announced construction will be beginning on a new paved pathway that will connect existing town trails to the community of Sunset Ridge.

The temporary road located behind the Sunset View portion of Cochrane's northernmost community will be paved over, restoring the pre-existing greenspace and replacing an existing informal pathway. Established by Melcor Developments Ltd, for construction access in early 2022, the site's original restoration plan included returning the area to its original natural state.

Food Fest gives back to Food Bank

Cochrane Food Fest took place this past weekend, and after the success of the event, the organizers and Cochranites gave back by presenting a $350 cheque to the Cochrane Activettes who run the local Food Bank as a donation.

The donation comes from extra tickets from Food Fest that Cochranites were generous enough to donate to the Food Bank. As well, a portion of the proceeds from the event went into the donation.

RVS hosting My First Ride Event for back-to-school

Children new to the school bus system, and their parents/guardians have a new tool to prepare for their first ride with the launch of a first ride video from Rocky View Schools (RVS).

The short informational video shows students and their parents/guardians what to expect and how to stay safe while riding on the school bus. Viewers can follow the students throughout their journey to and from school right up until they return home.

Helpful safety tips such as avoiding the bus danger zone are discussed, along with other important information all bus riders should know.

Sport4life Cochrane hosting 'Build Back Better' fundraiser

Sport4life Cochrane is hosting a fundraiser at The Venue Bar and Grill on Friday, Aug. 26th.

The purpose of the fundraiser is to seize the unique opportunity coming out of the pandemic to 'Build Back Better' how sports are operated by connecting the various sporting organizations within Cochrane, all while creating a safe and inclusive, and low-cost environment for all those who wish to participate.

Lea Wiens with Sport4life Cochrane says that the goal of the fundraiser is to support all of the programs that Sport4life offers in Cochrane.

Backpack program returning for back-to-school season

Cochrane's Backpack program is starting again on Wednesday, August 17th.

The Town of Cochrane announced it's starting date in a news release Friday afternoon.

"The long-running program aims to ease the stress and costs associated with starting a new school year by providing students grades K through 12 with important back-to-school supplies. With the help of this program, gearing up for school doesn’t have to be so stressful."

Family Resource Network Coordinator with the FRN Wendy Farnsworth says that the FRN is partnering with two different donors this year.

Heat warning in effect

A heat warning has been put in effect for the Bragg Creek and Rocky View County area.

Daytime temperatures are expected to reach in between 29 to 34 degrees celsius today according to Environment Canada.

Temperatures should cool this evening and tomorrow before heating back up on Wednesday.
